COMMENTARY BY JOE DROUKAS 10/2009
At this point talking about each song in detail I think would be a little tedious and redundant. It’s just all about a simpler time when all you needed was one pair of Levis, a guitar, a place to play, and people to listen.
Like the kid in “Thyroid Eyes” and “Crazy Man Band,” it’s about loading up the van with equipment, riding forever, playing as hard as you can, having some fun, then moving down the road.
It’s about falling in love, growing up, making choices, chasing down a dream, and saying goodbye.
The old “Yankee Trader” peddler gave way to Woolworths and Newburys, which in turn, as the song suggested, gave way to Wal-Mart and Kmart, which is effectively killing Main Street. This album brought me to New Hampshire, and happily it has been my home for many years now. And if you drive far enough into the country you still may find that old Yankee Trader selling goods and swapping lies.
I’ve written many songs since this album, which have gone on to have lives of their own. But it all started here.
And in truth, I guess Joe Drake and I never really said goodbye, since Joe Drake the rock and roller and Joe Droukas the singer songwriter are still at odds with each other, but continue to make progress.
