HIT THE SURF! ®(SOUNDTRACK FROM THE 1967 ABC-TELEVISION SPECIAL)

“Hit The Surf”®, a Claroil/ABC-TV half-hour 1967 television special was produced by famed TV producer/writer David Yarnell, among whose credits include multiple TV Specials, Tony Awards, Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert Series, and film. The music was written by composer/artist/arranger Alan Lorber, whose legendary credits as arranger and producer include the who's who of pop music. The songs for the show were written by Robert Kalina, then budding songwriter, moonlighting as an assistant New York DA, and who became the one of the leading criminal defense attorneys in the country whose client’s lists among the top rappers in the world. At the time of shooting this special there was 25,000 surfers in California. Today there are an astounding 2 million surfers worldwide with a surf industry of 7.4 billion dollars, 5000 surf shops, top board brands, sales in apparels, wet suits, footwear, accessories,, with worldwide competitions, and up to the minute information sources by web surflines, featuring forecasts, on site surf cams, and top surf spots which number 1200 worldwide to date.

As described in this special, the topside of the board gets a waxing. It has nothing to do with skimming smoothly over the water but for sure-footing for the surfer to make the ballet like moves to maneuver the board.

Famed novelist Jack London and surfing enthusiast in his 1907 analysis of the physics of the phenomenon, simply stated that when a wave crests it gets steeper. Imagine yourself sliding down a steep slope. If it stood still you would slide down. But a wave doesn't stand still, but the water that composes the wave stands still. You slide down and remain in your own position on the face of the wave, sliding down the still newer water that is rising and forming the wave. If the wave travels 15 miles and hour, you slide 15 miles an hour. Gravity does the rest, and there you go!
