___________ After predecessor group Papa Nebo had broken up two years earlier, the first of Free Beer's three albums was released on producer Alan Lorber's Southwind Records which was part of the Buddah Records group. (Papa Nebo was one of the original “chamber rock/contemporary country” groups who recorded for Atlantic Records and consisted of a girl violinist, a jazz saxophone (Bob Mintzer, now leader of the Yellow Jackets), classical piano, hard rock guitar and soft country rock harmonies with no drums. Two years later the group splintered into Free Beer headed by Papa Nebo founders Michael Packer, Sandy Allen and adding a third vocalist Bob Potter. They went on to make three Free Beer Albums.

The first, a self-titled album was produced by Brenden Harkin. Session players included drummer-great Bernard Purdie, blue grass guitarist Eric Weissburg, Jon Paris on harmonica, and Bob Mintzer, saxophone (from Papa Nebo).

The Alan Lorber produced second Free Beer album, the first of two released on RCA, featured pedal steel guitarist, Dan Daley, who wrote "Still in Saigon," for Charlie Daniels. The group went out on the road in support of the album performing throughout Texas and the South, opening for The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Doug Sahm, and Dr. Hook.

The third and last Free Beer album which was released, also produced by Alan Lorber, had an all-star studio musician line-up which included Wing's guitarist, Hugh McCracken; guitarist Steve Kahn; Will Lee, bass; Chris Parker, drums; Ken Ascher, piano. Specially written songs for the album were “Queen of the Purple Sage,” by singer/writer Lou Christie who sang background on the recording and “Time, Time, Time,” which was written by Grammy winner and top-five Nashville songwriter, Hugh Prestwood.

Currently Michael continues to record & perform with his group The Michael Packer Blues Band, and Sandy Allen recently released his first solo album.
