Alan Lorber’s musical work “Melancholy Red” explores stages of melancholy in two sides of the melancholic temperament, the emotional and the expressive, the mirror of the physical dark to the spiritual creative light, divisions into art, philosophy, and spirituality. Plato named it the source of all inspiration, historically producing great people. In the Medieval mind the Four Temperaments, melancholic among them, connected four outstanding colors that indicated the stages of alchemy (black, white, citrine, and red). Here, in Lorber’s modern orchestral neo-classical settings, he chooses creative blues, reds and greens to contrast with three darker expressions of the black, white and yellow. The elegy, “Sorry, You’re Gone”, contrasts the hopeful, “I Still Remember”, to a middle ground, "Return-Unknown".
